Job Title: Electrician Foreman

General Statement of Duties
Under the general supervision of the Electric Supervisor, this position serves as a working foreman responsible for leading and overseeing the daily operations of the maintenance electrician team and supporting staff. This includes coordinating work schedules, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards, and performing advanced electrical maintenance and troubleshooting tasks associated with Utility facilities.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Leads, performs, and oversees installation, inspection, testing, programming, and maintenance of single phase and polyphase electric meters and other associated metering equipment.
- Reviews customer electric service requirements, load characteristics, and rate eligibility to ensure appropriate service sizing and application of utility rate schedules.
- Leads and performs maintenance activities for the electrical equipment and systems supporting Utility buildings, operational facilities and infrastructure.
- Performs advanced troubleshooting and repair of motor control circuits, generators, lighting systems, and alarm circuits.
- Plans, prioritizes, and assigns daily work activities, monitors job progress, and provides technical guidance to personnel.
- Assists with SCADA hardware and software upgrades, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance.
- Maintains and oversees repairs to signal light systems and controls. Keeps records of work performed and equipment installed.
- Coordinates work activities with other Utility departments, contractors, external electricians, and to ensure effective project execution, system integration, and high-quality service delivery.
- Maintains effective working relationships with utility customers and key accounts to support load growth, understand operational needs, and enhance customer satisfaction.
- Ensures compliance with electrical codes, safety requirements, and Utility policies.
- Provides training, mentoring, and technical instruction to personnel on procedures, safety, and equipment operation.
- Maintain effective, professional, and proactive communications with coworkers and supervision to ensure clear work direction is provided along with providing timely status updates.
- Promotes and performs duties in a manner consistent with safe practices.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience
- High School diploma or G.E.D.
- Associate degree in electrical technology or a related field acceptable combination of training and experience in electrical maintenance, electrical wiring, electrical systems, and electric construction.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of electrical theory, control systems, and mechanical applications.
- Knowledgeable in electrical metering practices, SCADA technology, tools, and equipment.
- Skilled at reading blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Able to build effective relationships with utility staff, officials, and the public.
- Critical thinker that can analyze problems, evaluate options, and recommend solutions.
- Experienced in supervising personnel, organizing work, and reviewing data.
- Excellent at prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and data management tools, including GIS mapping and AMI metering software.
- Effective communicator in oral, written, and interpersonal formats.
Certification, Testing & Examination
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Possession of a valid South Dakota Class A CDL with air brakes endorsement or ability to obtain within 180 days of hire.
- Possession of a valid Electrical Contractor’s License from the State of South Dakota is preferred.
- Other such testing and/or certification as deemed necessary by Brookings Municipal
Utilities.

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.
- Excellent hand/eye coordination is required for this position.
- Occasionally required to lift, carry, and push/pull up to 70 lbs.

- While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently in an indoor office environment.
- Normal indoor conditions of heat, humidity, and dust.
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee will have frequent exposure to outside weather conditions, which may include extreme cold or heat.
- Position involves regular contact with other employees and members of the public.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal with occasional exposure to loud noise levels.
