At HR Green, our mission is simple: Building Communities. Improving Lives.
For more than 110 years, we've partnered with municipalities, public agencies, and communities to deliver infrastructure solutions that strengthen communities and improve quality of life. Today, we're proud to be recognized as one of the nation's leading engineering firms, consistently ranked on Engineering News-Record's Top 500 Design Firms list, while also earning recognition as a Great Place to Work.
We're currently seeking a Construction Technician I to join our Transportation Construction team. This is an opportunity to build hands-on field experience while working alongside experienced construction professionals, contractors, and clients on infrastructure projects that directly impact the communities we serve.
If you're looking for a role where you can get out in the field, develop practical construction expertise, and gain exposure to quality, materials, cost, schedule, and project documentation, we'd love to talk with you.
What You’ll Do
As a Construction Technician I, you'll support the successful delivery of transportation construction projects by observing work in the field, documenting progress, verifying quality and quantities, and helping ensure construction aligns with plans, specifications, contract documents, and applicable requirements. You'll gain broad exposure to the construction process while building the technical judgment and client-facing skills that can support long-term growth in construction engineering and inspection.
Field Inspection and Project Support
- Observe and document construction activities to verify work is completed in accordance with plans, specifications, contract documents, and applicable local, state, and federal requirements.
- Interpret construction plans, specifications, and procedures and help address actual field conditions as they arise.
- Identify construction defects or compliance concerns related to design, materials, installation, or site conditions and help develop practical solutions.
- Perform quality assurance checks, material yield checks, tolerance and thickness verification, and measurement of pay-item quantities.
- Assist with basic construction layout activities, including bench circuits and providing line and grade for construction elements.
- Maintain accurate field notes, measurements, reports, project files, and documentation, including records needed for funding-agency audits.
Client, Contractor and Project Coordination
- Communicate with clients, contractors, HR Green staff, and other project stakeholders to help resolve field issues and keep projects moving.
- Participate in progress meetings and support discussions involving schedules, plan changes, quantities, costs, and construction concerns.
- Support pay estimates and quantity verification and help document work that does not conform to project requirements.
- Use sound judgment in the field and respond effectively to changing project conditions, contractor questions, and stakeholder concerns.
What You Bring
You bring a practical, detail-oriented approach to field work and enjoy seeing how infrastructure projects come together in real time. You're comfortable communicating with a variety of stakeholders, working independently when needed, and balancing quality, safety, documentation, and project needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Veterans are encouraged to apply. Relevant military experience, training, education, and certifications will be evaluated and may satisfy some or all of the minimum education and experience requirements for this position.
- Strong time-management, communication, technical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and understand technical literature, engineering plans, construction plans, and specifications.
- Training with equipment commonly used in engineering-related testing and analysis.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
- Valid driver's license in the state of residence and reliable transportation for company business.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required project documentation certification for the region assigned.
- Ability and willingness to travel regularly to project sites, including assignments that may require longer-than-normal commute times.
- Ability to perform field work in varying weather conditions, stand for extended periods on uneven terrain, and lift and move at least 30 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Highly desirable candidates will bring one or more of the following:
- Engineering or Construction Management degree.
- 0-5 years of related construction observation experience working with moderately complex construction plans.
